A Concise Grammar for English Language Teachers
Tony Penston
Introduction
This book is in fact the new edition of a Grammar Course for TEFL Certificate. The change of title is to reflect the emphasis on the new edition and the new material primarily aimed at teachers. The book is compact and easy to use, with each chapter dealing with one area of grammar and providing explanations and examples. It is suitable for use on a course or for self-study.
The first edition aimed at students taking the TEFL Certificate and was designed to cover the major areas of grammar in a relatively short course. In this second edition, the book is designed to be an even more useful reference. It is not meant to be a complete grammar of English, but to cover the grammar teachers need to explain and answer questions. It also includes activities and tasks which help teachers develop clear explanations and anticipate learner problems.
The book is organised in a sequence of chapters, starting with the sentence and moving to the grammar of clauses, verbs, nouns, and so on. The chapters begin with a short introduction to the topic and then provide explanations of grammatical terms and structures.
The book also includes tasks. These are intended to help teachers check their understanding, develop teaching ideas and practise explaining grammar clearly. Some tasks are designed for use in class, while others are for individual work.
Finally, the book includes an index for quick reference.
