الوصف
“Notes from the Underground” is a first-person, highly self-analytical narrative in which an embittered narrator—an intelligent man living in isolation—writes to expose himself and his society. In Part I, he insists he is sick, spiteful, and unattractive, yet cannot bring himself to act with straightforward malice. Instead, his overactive consciousness turns life into endless oscillation: he understands himself, argues with himself, and even turns his own degradation into a strange source of “enjoyment.” Through bitter reflections on conscience, inertia, “laws of nature,” revenge, and human motives, the narrator challenges the idea that people can be rationally improved or made good through simple systems. The result is a disturbing, memorable portrait of modern alienation.
